Our program
Middle School is a time for children to explore what school has to offer and participate in things that speak to them as individuals. We offer multiple opportunities for students to enrich their lives with music!
PERFORMING GROUPS
Our performance program offers students their first opportunity to "elect" a class. Students may opt to study vocal production in a chorus class and/or increase their skills on an instrument through membership in the band or orchestra! All of these classes fulfill the students' music requirements for each year in middle school. Performance classes are graded like any other academic class, and the quarterly average is calculated in the student's overall GPA/ school average.
Requirements for the performance program include:
- 2 evening concerts a year, one in the winter and one in the spring
- Attending a weekly lesson for instrument study (band and orchestra only). Lessons take place on a rotating basis during the regular daily schedule. Students will miss one class per week and are required to confer with the other teacher about any missed work.
- Practicing at home using all resources available! Whether it is their voice or another instrument, you should be hearing these practice sessions at home!
MUSIC CLASS
Students in grades 5, 6, and 7 that do not opt for one or more performance classes are scheduled for general music classes. In these classes we explore many facets of music with a focus on the NYS standards for Music for Middle School. 5th and 6th graders get one semester of music class and 7th graders take music for the entire year. Classes are every other day opposite another academic special area class. All music classes are graded, and the quarterly grade is part of students' overall average.
EXTRA CURRICULAR
We offer additional opportunities to students that are seeking even more music and performance in their lives! See a brief description below:
